Stress Management
Navigating alternate learning may be challenging at first and it is normal and okay to feel stressed about this new way of learning.
Stress can be a powerful motivator and can help you be productive. However, too much stress is detrimental to your well-being.
As noted on TRU’s Wellness Centre website:
Although we can’t always control what happens in our day-to-day lives, we can learn how we react to and cope with stressful events. The better we become at adapting and coping with situations, the better we are able to manage the stress in our lives.
Recognize your own response to stress. Symptoms of stress can manifest in many different ways:
Stress Management Tips:
- Take care of your body – such as eating well, sleeping well, and exercising. Also, with transitioning to online learning it is important to take breaks from screen time to get outside and engage in leisure activities. Sometimes simply getting back to basic care can make all the difference.
- Stay connected to friends and family
- Practice Mindfulness – Notice the thoughts and feelings you are having, but then bring your focus back to the present. Focus on your breath and what is around you.
Many people partake in mindfulness by practicing deep breathing, yoga, meditation, tai chi, or going out in nature.
Apps for mindfulness include: Calm, Headspace, Mindshift.
Check out TRU Wellness Centre’s provides the following grounding techniques which may be helpful:
- Take breaks and choose to make time for leisure activity – things that will rejuvenate you (self-care) such as power naps, exercise breaks, breathing, meditation, music, snacks, social time. Make time for what makes you feel good and what you enjoy doing.
- Be kind to yourself and patient with yourself– exercising self-compassion is so important, comfort yourself and treat yourself as you would a friend.
- Time management – learning how to manage your time more effectively can help, check out the tips and resources below.
- Learn to say no – you are human, and it is important to know your own boundaries and limitations. A lot of stress and pressure can be caused by having too many commitments. Before you take on something new, consider if you have the time and energy to commit to it.
- Ask for help – You are not alone. Don’t be afraid to reach out to supports at TRU or in your community.
